Four Crosses in northern Powys lies within a regionally important multiperiod landscape at a nodal point within the Welsh borderland, now under pressure from development. The article attempts a synthesis of the results of published and unpublished archaeological projects that have been undertaken within this landscape since the 1980s by numerous organisations, set within a broader regional framework. It proposes a reinterpretation and redating of some previously published material and examines in particular the evidence of funerary activity and land division from prehistoric to early historic times and how these may relate to land use and social hierarchies.
