Abstract

The author investigates the development of enclosure and field systems in northeast Gwent from the late medieval to the early modern period. Following an introduction presenting an overview of the area, its landscape, economy and population, and a discussion of field names and morphology, the paper looks at six case studies focusing on their distinctive history and field and enclosure patterns: Llantilio Crossenny, White Castle, Cillough (Killough or Cil-lwch), Llanfair grange and wood; other woodland areas, and dispersed or peripheral farmsteads.
