Abstract

New examination of historical sources and of new archaeological information, place-names, dedications, estates, etc, is added to the evidence of curvilinear enclosures to suggest that the pre-Norman churches are mainly in the north and east of the county. Numerous monasteries are also attested. All the sites would repay excavation for both secular and ecclesiastical evidence.
