The site visit was carried out by archaeologist E. Wapshott MCIfA on Wednesday 15th April 2026. This work follows the guidance that is outlined in: Standard and Guidance for the Archaeological Investigation and Recording of Standing Buildings or Structures (CIfA 2020); and Understanding Historic Buildings: A Guide to Good Recording Processes (Historic England 2016)iii. The discussion of the setting follows the approach that is outlined in the appropriate guidance (DoT Guidance and Historic England 2015) Nos.13-15 Lansdown Road is a late 19th to very early 20th century building, it is of good quality, although rather generic in style and form. It is a well-known local landmark building and there is associative value with the various stores that have occupied the site. It is of local interest and is a non-designated heritage asset, as well as being located within a Conservation Area, which adds to its value. The building survives in overall in fair to poor condition, and with a few of its original historic features remaining. This presents a good opportunity for sympathetic development with conservation and restoration leading the proposals, providing flexibility for positive change and rationalisation of spaces to revitalise its commercial potential.
