Abstract

Abstract The Indian handloom sector represents a vital blend of cultural heritage, artisan skill, and sustainable production practices. However, the contemporary fashion landscape, dominated by fast production cycles and changing consumer preferences, has significantly reduced the visibility and economic viability of traditional crafts. This study shifts the focus from the general problem of craft decline to the role of design innovation as a transformative mechanism for repositioning handloom textiles within modern fashion systems. Using a qualitative and design-oriented research approach, the study analyzes how traditional weaving techniques can be reinterpreted through modern silhouettes, simplified aesthetics, and functional garment structures. The findings indicate that consumer acceptance of handloom products depends more on design adaptability and usability than on cultural value alone. The research proposes a design-led sustainability framework that connects artisans, designers, and digital platforms to create market-responsive products. This approach not only enhances the economic sustainability of artisans but also promotes environmentally responsible fashion practices, positioning handloom textiles as competitive elements within contemporary fashion.
