Désiré Collen is an emeritus professor at KU Leuven Faculty of Medicine in Belgium and was director of the VIB Department for Transgene Technology and Gene Therapy (now part of VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology). He discovered the therapeutic potential of t-PA for treating acute myocardial infarction and stroke, leading to the development of recombinant t-PA (alteplase) in collaboration with Genentech. Collen has held positions including Professor of Biochemistry and Medicine at the University of Vermont College of Medicine from 1984 to 2005.
