Donald S. Fredrickson (1924-2002) was an American physiologist and biomedical research leader who served as the 11th Director of the National Institutes of Health from 1975 to 1981. He conducted pioneering research on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism at the NIH's National Heart Institute, developing the international standard for classifying hyperlipoproteinemias and identifying genetic disorders including Tangier disease. He also directed the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and later held leadership roles at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
