Fortuin, M.D. (1940-2010) was a cardiologist at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he developed the first echocardiography laboratory and rose to professor of medicine in 1986. He conducted research on air pollution effects on the heart while assigned to the University of North Carolina School of Medicine via the U.S. Public Health Service. His work included key publications on echocardiographic assessment of cardiac function and hypertensive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
