Abstract

The heat capacities of CrF3 and CrCl3 have been measured over the temperature range from 15 to 300°K. CrF3 has two peaks; the upper peak has its maximum at 69.8°K and is associated with a known magnetic transition. The lower peak has its maximum at 45.6°K and has not been correlated with magnetic phenomena. The total magnetic entropy is divided almost equally between the two. CrCl3 has a single peak at 16.8°K which is associated with a ferromagnetic transition. For CrF3, S298.150=22.44 eu; for CrCl3, S298.150=29.38 eu. Other thermodynamic functions are tabulated.
