The article examines the relevance of training engineering personnel to mitigate the negative environmental impact and promote the development of a low-carbon economy. Economic development requires the active participation of human capital with environmental competencies, and “green engineering” contributes to the development, creation, and application of environmentally sound technologies. The study identified barriers to creating educational programs that promote the training of “green” engineers through literary analysis. The study is based on a content analysis of the national strategies of leading countries, which enabled us to summarize best practices. Also, educational programs for training "green" engineers exist worldwide, which are relatively new and financially demanding. Additionally, there are various areas of training for the green economy, including the utilization of renewable energy sources, alternative energy sources, and waste recycling. The results of the work can serve as a basis for improving educational programs and developing sustainable engineering competencies that contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and increasing the competitiveness of the national economy.
