The study examined local government and development of communities in Ebonyi South senatorial zone of Ebonyi State of Nigeria. One of the objectives of the study is to determine the role of local government in community development. The scope of the study is on the topic of the study which was limited to focus on the period between 2015 to 2023. The study was guided by two hypotheses which were tested using Chi square. In the course of the study, other related literature was reviewed. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used in the collection of data. The population of the study was 820,480 from which a sample size of 400 was drawn using Taro Yameni formula for sample size determination. The data collected were presented in tables. The findings of the revealed that the local government has not played a significant role in the development of communities and that lack of financial autonomy is one of the hindrances to local government performance. The study therefore, recommends for financial autonomy of the local government to enable the local people hold them accountable for inefficiency and ineffectiveness.
