Self-control is related to adolescent behaviors, including the likelihood of engaging in criminal activity. Earlier models, such as Gottfredson and Hirschi’s Self Control Theory, framed self-control as a stable trait. However, contemporary research suggests a more dynamic view—self-control is influenced by developmental, contextual, and neurobiological factors. Building on this, our study examines the neural and neurochemical mechanisms underlying self-control and their relevance to criminal behavior in youth. When self-control is impaired, adolescents are more likely to demonstrate aggressive or violent behavior. Neuroimaging results highlight that reduced gray matter volume in the right orbitofrontal cortex and altered connectivity with the anterior cingulate cortex are associated with lower self-control and increased risk-taking tendencies. These findings align with research suggesting that self-control is multidimensional, involving cognitive regulation, emotional reactivity, and future orientation. Neurochemically, deficits in inhibitory neurotransmitters like serotonin may further impair behavioral inhibition. Together, these insights emphasize that self-control is not a fixed ability, but a modifiable process shaped by brain structure, chemistry, and life experience. This research contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the brain-behavior link and suggests promising directions for interventions targeting self-control to reduce youth delinquency.
