As a philosophical discipline with established principles and methods, hermeneutics is a phenomenon whose foundation was led by the modern way of philosophizing and thinking in general. However, the very notion of hermeneutics is actually denoted by a word of Greek origin, ἑrmeneyticή. We also come across this word in the rich corpus of Plato's dialogues. Having in mind both of the above facts and precisely because of that that Schleiermacher spoke about the basic settings of the hermeneutic discipline in his lectures, within the framework of this paper we will try to find the mentioned settings of the hermeneutic discipline in appropriate places in several of Plato's dialogues. In accordance with that, we will first briefly present the results of Schleiermacher's considerations of general hermeneutics, so that, thanks to the chosen order of presentation, we can dedicate most of the work to the analysis of excursion on the interpretation of two verses of Simonides' poem from Plato's dialogue Protagoras.
