ABSTRACT Coastal cities have become the hotspots of unplanned urbanization, further increasing the vulnerability and risk of climate change. The most urbanizing 22 cities in 10 coastal districts, which have become the hub for the climate migrants, have been selected for the study. The study assessed the vulnerability and risk index in these 22 cities following the IPCC AR5 framework and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) approach. Field investigation, KII, and FGD were conducted to identify the natural and physical components of on-field vulnerability stress. Several cities, including Chalna, Morrelganj, Kalaroa, Char Fasson, Kuakata, Lalmohan, Burhanuddin, Paikgachha, and Patharghata, are found in high vulnerability and risk zones. The risk in the Chalna, Patharghata, Morrelganj, Muladi, Mehendiganj, and Paikgacha areas will increase rapidly. Most vulnerability stress will occur due to riverbank erosion, storm surge, salinity intrusion, waterlogging, weak infrastructure, and drinking water scarcity. The main concern regarding natural and physical vulnerability stress is waterlogging, which is exacerbated by inadequate drainage systems, solid waste dumping, canal siltation, and urban planning deficiencies. The study recommends ensuring drinking water security, canal dredging, connectivity reestablishment, and sluice gates with adequate widening, proper drainage infrastructure, solid waste management system, and forest reservation.
