Abstract The anatomical properties of wood with relation to its position in the radial and longitudinal axis of the tree have been the object of investigation since 1867. As a result of this research, certain truths may be said to have been established. However, the results of the various investigations have been far from identical, and in some instances workers studying the same species in much the same manner have arrived at widely differing conclusions. Consequently, the author believed that an experiment designed to test statistically the aforementioned relationships might throw more light on some of the debatable points and consolidate some of the available information. With this in mind, a study of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) was initiated.
