Aim. To consider the problem of high frequency justified and unjustified lexical borrowings in the modern Russian language, their functioning, leading to the erosion of linguistic identity. Methodology . The main research method is corpus analysis, as well as semantic analysis of lexical borrowings based on the author’s corpus and quantitative analysis, which allow obtaining data on the main trends and reasons for the appearance of “foreign” words in the language. Results. The current state of the process of borrowing vocabulary into the modern Russian language is characterized by means of the corpus and semantic analysis, the concept of justified and unjustified borrowings is supplemented, the phenomenon of semantic shift of borrowed lexemes in different types of discourse is analyzed. Research implications. The main results of the study provide an addition to the concept of lexical borrowing; special attention is paid to the concept of unjustified borrowing, one of the most significant consequences of which is linguistic inflation and the erosion of linguistic identity – the gradual displacement of traditional linguistic forms, which leads to a change in the cultural code of the nation.
