Life on hemodialysis: a physician’s view of psychological problems, the psychosocial status of the patient

In recent years, there has been a steady increase in the number of hemodialysis patients suffering from terminal stage CKD not only abroad, but also in Russia. The issues of the psychosocial status of such patients are relevant. Depression, anxiety, social isolation, and suicidal thoughts are common companions of patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment, which significantly deteriorates their quality of life and prevents successful adaptation to treatment. The article examines the psychoemotional and social aspects of the lives of patients on hemodialysis, and analyzes the causes and consequences of depression and other mental disorders in this group of patients. Gender differences in the perception of the disease, the role of social support and intervention in the adaptation process, as well as the need for a comprehensive approach, including psychotherapeutic and drug treatment, family involvement, and regular diagnostics of psychoemotional disorders are described. The recommendations are aimed at improving the quality of life of patients through psychological assistance and supportive measures.
