Setting up a research data repository is a time-consuming task. Learning from others who went a similar way can be very helpful. For that reason we want to share our own experience. This article is based on the lessons learned while setting up a repository based on Invenio RDM at the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS) in Mannheim between March 2022 and September 2023. We explain our decisions and steps taken on the way. Even though our requirements differ from other institutions’ we are confident that this description can be helpful to others. We mostly worked with language data, still the basic considerations are as valid and relevant to all areas within the Digital Humanities and beyond. This article is neither intended to convince you to set up your own repository nor to do the opposite. It should, however, help you to make your own informed decisions.
