The aim of the article is to identify the importance of rail transport for Military Mobility Initiative of European Union (EU) and NATO. The research was concentrated on solving the following research problem: To what extent can the rail transport be used to move allied forces to Poland? To develop the article author mainly used document examination method. As a result the essence of rail transport was specified as a key branch of inland transport for the quick operational movement of a significant number of troops. Areas requiring further improvement have been identified, namely the development of modern infrastructure enabling the reception of allied troops, shortening the time of bureaucratic formalities related to crossing state borders and increasing the capabilities of commercial rail carriers to transport heavy military equipment.
