The Bibionidae Newman, 1834, or march flies, are very frequent in the Oligocene lacustrine formations from France and Germany (Skartveit Skartveit & Wedmann, 2021). In some places (e.g., Aix-en-Provence), they dominate the insect assemblages in term of number of specimens. The most frequent genera are Bibio Geoffroy, 1762 and Plecia Wiedemann, 1828. The proportions between the Bibioninae Newman, 1834 and Pleciinae Duda, 1930 can be used to estimate the variations in temperature in the area (Collomb et al., 2008).
