Subject. The article deals with methods for assessing the creditworthiness of commercial bank borrowers (including individual borrowers). Objectives. The purpose is to identify specific areas for improving methods for assessing the creditworthiness of borrowers of commercial banks, based on modern approaches to creditworthiness assessment. Methods. On the basis of analysis and synthesis, I propose to change the form of the scoring card for express assessment of creditworthiness, and adjust the criteria and parameters for calculating the permissible loan amount. Results. The study established that there is no consensus on the list of indicators and criteria that characterize the assessment of commercial bank borrowers’ creditworthiness to date. I offered a list of indicators, which enable to effectively solve the problem of balancing between increasing lending volumes and reducing credit risk in commercial banks of the Russian Federation. Conclusions. To develop effective credit relations, it is necessary to improve methods for assessing the creditworthiness of borrowers of commercial banks. At the moment, identifying the risks of loss of creditworthiness of individual borrowers, expressed in the accumulation of overdue debt, is a key stage in managing the credit activities of a modern commercial bank specializing in retail products. The obvious advantage of proposed adjustments is that with their help, the bank can accurately take into account the behavioral characteristics of individual categories of borrowers, achieving an optimal balance between risk and income.
