( N Engl J Med . 2024;390(11):1050–1051. doi:10.1056/NEJMe2401072) Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an infection with detrimental effects, especially for infants. In fact, it is the leading cause of hospitalization for infants in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first RSV vaccine for pregnant mothers. It is based on the RSV prefusion F protein (RSVPreF). This article discusses a phase 3 trial that assessed the effects of a maternal RSV vaccine (RSVPreF3-Mat) on extreme RSV-type cases in young infants.
