This study investigates the discourse surrounding gender-based violence (GBV) on Malawian Facebook pages, triggered by a widely shared story of domestic violence. Through qualitative analysis of user reactions to the story, the research uncovers a disturbing trend of support for violent actions against women and highlights the role of social media as both a platform for reinforcing harmful gender norms and a potential tool for positive change. While a significant portion of comments endorsed extreme violence, a minority offered alternative, non-violent responses, suggesting opportunities for promoting gender equality. The study reveals critical insights into how online spaces influence attitudes towards GBV in Malawi, underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions, and suggests leveraging positive online influencers to foster a culture of respect and non-violence.
