In this article it has done, the theoretical analysis of the psychological criteria for sports selection. It was found that the assessment of physical preparation and anthropometric information for determining a sportsman suitability for a specific sport is definitely important, but these indicators are not always optimal. The psychological component of readiness is including motivation, volitional qualities, cognitive processes, emotional and volitional qualities, personal qualities. It has established that psychological selection is a complex process that includes the use of various research methods: questionnaire, testing, observation, interview, experiment, etc. It has emphasized that special attention should be paid to the psychological support of the sportsman. This support includes: training in self-regulation skills, development of psychological resistance to stress, education of willpower.
