Multi-criteria decision analysis of shuttering material utilization in tall building construction based on a hybrid approach of best worst method and topsis

The choosing of shuttering significantly influences the time performance and cost-effectiveness of reinforced concrete structures due to the continuous nature of shuttering operations throughout the construction process. It can also be viewed as a MCDM problem, wherein a variety of alternatives are assessed based on multiple criteria. In this research, a hybrid methodology combining the BWM and TOPSIS model was employed to evaluate the utilization of shuttering materials in tall building construction. The BWM was utilized to establish the weighting matrix between decision making criteria derived from the preceding Exploratory Factor Analysis stage and the alternatives within the analytical framework. Furthermore, the TOPSIS method was utilized to rank these alternatives. To validate the applicability of the suggested methodology, a case study was conducted to determine the preferred shuttering material among three types of timber, mivan, and plastic within the context of construction in Vietnam, and the results were discussed. The study identified plastic shuttering as the optimal solution based on expert evaluations. These findings are intended to enhance managerial understanding of shuttering systems, advocating for the integration of decision support tools in tall construction projects to improve planning precision and overall project success.
