Laboratory testing of airborne and impact sound insulation in accordance with ASTM E90 and E492 use conventional microphones for performing the measurements. Our laboratory has utilized an audio visual camera to visually identify areas of the assembly where transmission is maximized. Our experience with the camera allows us to use the visual output of the camera to ensure that the assembly has been properly sealed to avoid the potential concern for unintended flanking and lower than ideal results and ratings. Through this application of the technology, we have found success with optimizing the STC and IIC ratings of the assemblies that are tested.
