Abstract Introduction The objective was the biomechanical analysis of the position and the evaluation of risk factors for MSDs. Methods The analysis of activity was carried out through observations of situations and video recordings. The workstation was static for four hours in a cabin located at a height of 35 m moving along an overhead crane. A 2 minutes cycle for ten maneuvers with two joysticks required great concentration. The questionnaire made it possible to locate pain and its intensity on a visual analog scale (VAS). The MSDs assessment methods were the VAS of repetitiveness of a movement and the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) method which requires observation over several work cycles to select the most frequent and/or most restrictive posture a priori. This reference method for rating joint positions takes into account the entire body posture. Results lower back pain was reported by both operators. The intensity of the pain was level 4. The VAS for the repetitiveness of a movement revealed a score equal to 7 indicating high repetitiveness due to static maintenance of the back and neck. The RULA method made it possible to note a total score of 5 indicating the urgent need for modifications. Discussion and conclusion Postural constraints in the spine and neck are linked to visual control of the task on the ground. Wrist pain is due to flexion - extension at high rates due to commands located outside the work areas. A preventive and participatory strategy involving all social partners must be developed.
