This paper describes a guiding framework that was proposed to guide the design of AI support in knowledge-building classrooms. Drawing on prior work, this framework includes three levels: (a) philosophical beliefs and visions of education that guide the integration of AI in knowledge-building classrooms; (b) pedagogical strategies and human-computer interaction (HCI) frameworks pertinent to productive knowledge building; and (c) pedagogical tactics and human-AI interaction models that can be employed to achieve goals in particular pedagogical scenarios. While this framework was proposed for the context of knowledge building, it could certainly inform design efforts in other areas of education.
