ISBN 9781368095358 18. 99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 8-12 Agnes Chan is a winner, a track star in Malaysia with a sports scholarship to a university in the United States, but her plans are derailed by a freak injury. Her scholarship offers subsequently rescinded, Agnes copes by taking up stand-up comedy. An international competition for young comedians presents the perfect opportunity for Agnes to be a winner once again and prevent her mother from worrying and possibly relapsing into depression. However, to reach the top, Agnes will have to contend with her old track rival, rich boy Royce Taslim. First-person narration gives readers an in-depth look at a polarizing character in all her flawed glory; although abrasive and sometimes mean, Agnes' narration is also funny and honest, especially in the painfully realistic depiction of her anxieties over her mom's mental health. While Agnes insecurities and envy of her wealthy classmates compel her to keep people at arm's length, readers will find satisfaction and joy in her journey to grow up and overcome her worst self, along with the expected romcom sparks and witty banter.
