Singapore faces a degree of political uncertainty

Significance Pritam Singh, leader of the main opposition Workers’ Party (WP), was charged with lying to parliament. S Iswaran, until recently a member of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) and transport minister, was handed eight new charges to add to the 27 he already faced. Singapore has long prided itself on clean governance and political stability. Impacts The PAP will attempt to demonstrate that it is doing more to ensure the highest standards of conduct among its members. Whatever the outcome of Singh’s case, the WP will find it hard to improve its electoral prospects. Singapore will step up training for election officials as the next parliamentary polls draw closer.
