The impact of family resilience of disabled adult families and social support outside the family on the self-esteem of non-disabled siblings

This study was conducted in order to identify the factors that influence the self-esteem of the non-disabled siblings of adult family members with disabilities. A total of 223 non-disabled siblings were interviewed in cooperation with institutions for adults with disabilities, such as welfare centres for the disabled, adult day care centres and workshops for the disabled, located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and the results were analysed using t and F tests and multiple regression analysis. The results of the study showed that family resilience and social support had a significant impact on self-esteem. Their explanatory power was higher than that of demographic variables. The significance of this study is that it examines how family resilience and social support outside the family can have a positive impact on the self-esteem of adult siblings of people with disabilities and explores the implications.
