Considering obligations imposed by the European Community, especially climate changes, it is necessary to make a shift in the paradigm of electricity production. Power system of Bosnia and Herzegovina is predominantly based on electricity production from thermal and hydro power plants. In last decade, more interest in investing in renewable energy resources has appeared. This paper intends to point out limitation and potential consequences that renewable energy resources can have on power system. The paper presents proposal on how the transmission network can follow the development of new installed capacity from renewable energy sources, but also proposes solutions for more efficient integration of renewable energy resources in power system, using model of power system in Northeastern Bosnia with integrated virtual power plants.
