A New Mode of Protection: The Case for Redesigning our Policing and Public Safety Institutions

Abstract The society in which the police operate is changing radically, meaning that we need to rethink our policing and wider public safety institutions. Policing needs to be clearer as to its purpose, and needs to work in a much more collaborative way with other public services, particularly to do more to prevent crime and harm. Policing needs new or reformed capabilities in areas such as legitimacy, technology and skills. And finally, policing needs a better organisational platform if it is to play its role in keeping people safe in the transformed conditions of the twenty‐first century.
