A Exploratory Study on the Perceived Role Identities of On-site Counselors for Youth: Q Methodological Approach

This study investigates the perceived role identities of on-site counselors for youth using Q-methodology. For this purpose, 36 preliminary statements were extracted through literature review, and then the final 29 Q samples were chosen through experts’ preliminary research. The P sample, comprising 22 counselors, was then tasked with categorizing the Q samples, and the data were analyzed using the PQMETHOD program. The result presented threefold role identity perceptions among on-site counselors for youth: counselors who are loyal to the traditional counselor role, emphasizing trust and understanding; active counselors focusing on community resource connection and problem-solving; convergence counselors employing a multidisciplinary approach. The research discussed the features of counselors regarding their role identity types and suggested the limitations and implications of this study. The research findings will serve as fundamental data to improve the system for on-site counselors and related services.
