Gioacchino Rossini is known all over the world, first of all, as the author of 39 operas, but his contribution to the development of spiritual genres of Italian music was also very significant. It was the Small Solemn Mass that became one of the most original examples of this genre, not only in Rossini's work, but also in the history of the mass of the XIX century in general. The first author's edition of this work for 12 singers, piano and harmonium was written in 1863. The orchestral version appeared a few years later, in 1867. A small solemn mass is distinguished by a number of deviations from the generally accepted canon, starting with the text and ending with the composition of the performers. The extensive use of polyphonic techniques brings it closer to the samples of the Baroque era and even earlier works of strictly style. It was these features, as well as great opportunities for a variety of conducting work, that attracted the attention of the author of the text to this work.
