This editorial summarizes the most recent seminar of the Early Childhood Music Education Commission (ECME) of the International Society for Music Education (ISME), held in Helsinki, Finland, in July 2024. The seminar explored the theme ‘Enhancing a Sustainable Future with Music in Early Childhood’ and this Special Issue is the first of two parts to report on some of the research and practice presented during the seminar. A theme of relationship stands out when considering the various ways that children experience and engage in musical experiences across a variety of musical settings and life experiences.
