Research methodology This case study was based on secondary sources of data to analyze Nestlé’s strategic restructuring and turnaround strategies. The secondary sources included industry reports, company annual reports, press announcements, financial filings and business news stories from reputable sources such as Reuters, Forbes and Barron’s. These sources offered in-depth observations of Nestlé’s operational issues and strategic interventions in the times of weakening performance and market volatility. The case synthesized these observations with applicable strategic management theories – such as corporate restructuring, turnaround strategy, the BCG Matrix and PESTEL analysis – to deliver a rigorous but tractable model for classroom discussion. This secondary data-driven approach ensured factual dependability along with providing a sound basis for academic teaching strategy, organizational transformation and competitive positioning. Case overview/synopsis Nestlé the world’s largest food company is experiencing decreasing sales, low operating efficiencies and increased competition. The stock value declined by 29% between January 2022 and August 2024. In August 2024, newly appointed CEO Laurent Freixe presented a turnaround strategy by restructuring operations, focusing on 31 “billionaire brands” and price competitiveness. Challenges remain in terms of economic uncertainties, inflation and geopolitical risks. This case assesses whether Freixe’s strategy can regain the market leadership for Nestlé amid operational and market challenges.
