Key Points

  • To evaluate the archaeological impact of the proposed Space Transportation System 69 KV transmission line project at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
  • Conducted an archaeological investigation for the proposed transmission line route.
  • Evaluated archaeological sites SBA-534 and -680 along the transmission line path.
  • Recommended data recovery strategies at specific power pole anchor locations.
  • Identified eight additional locations with subsurface archaeological material concentrations.
  • Provided recommendations for archaeological data recovery to address potential impacts on identified sites.

Abstract

This document is a Section 106 archaeological evaluation report. An archaeological investigation was conducted for the proposed Space Transportation System 69 KV transmission line at VAFB. The project calls for the construction of a transmission line to Station Set Location V-86. The transmission line is approximately 10 miles long and extends from an existing electrical substation at South Gate near the intersection of Highway 246 and Arguello Boulevard to V-23. Recommendations are presented for archaeological data recovery at three power pole anchor locations within archaeological sites SBA-534 and -680. Eight other locations were encountered with associated subsurface concentrations of archaeological material.
