A nonpillar shaped Pillararene derivative, Oxgens2 pillar6arene, has been synthesized via 4 + 2 and 2 + 1+2 + 1 cyclization reactions from an oxygen substituted dimer and an oxygen substituted tetramer, respectively. X-ray crystallographic studies reveal that the introduction of oxygen atoms renders O2 pillar6arene 4, a nonpillar shaped macrocyclic arene where the aromatic rings and bridging groups are not coplanar. Adsorption experiments have confirmed that O2 pillar6arene 4 exhibits efficient iodine uptake capacity from both gaseous and aqueous phases.
