An accurate archaeological record of the structure was produced based upon Historic England's Understanding Historic Buildings: A Guide to Good Recording Practice and the generic Leicestershire County Council brief for Level 3 Historic Building Recording. This included measured drawings and a detailed photographic record. Prior to the project commencing, 4 Roman Way was thought to be of mid 17th century origin. The recording exercise clearly indicated that the building actually comprised of a late 18th century two up two down cottage which formed part of a closed courtyard, latterly heightened with the addition of a second floor in the 19th century. The creation of Roman Way in 1936 saw demolition of the majority of the courtyard and only No. 4 survived.
