This study explores the relationship between business process management, business process performance and data analysis technology in the higher education sector of Australia. Preliminary results from a thematic analysis of interviews with different position stakeholders reveal that data analytics can be deployed for business process performance to enhance business process management. However, data analytics can also be used without being linked explicitly to business process performance and further, data analytics can even result in a detachment of business process performance assessment and process management from the organisation to a third-party software developer. This has implications for the capacity of an academic institution to maintain a competitive edge over other competitors.
