There have been significant technical advances in HIV diagnostic assays and updates to testing regulations over the past decade. Further, there have been significant changes in the epidemiology of HIV in Australia in the context of contemporary HIV treatment and prevention strategies. In this setting, the landscape of laboratory testing for HIV has undergone substantial change. This discussion will provide an update on contemporary issues for the laboratory detection and confirmation of HIV in Australia, as well as the opportunities for improving HIV care through optimal use of diagnostics.
