An expansion of the range of Volga pikeperch Sander volgensis from south to north has been recorded in the Kama River basin. Until the 2010s, the northern boundary of species distribution within the Kama River was the dam of the Votkinsk Hydroelectric Power Station. From 2019, the species began to be regularly recorded further north, in the lower part of the Votkinsk Reservoir; in 2024, Volga pikeperch spread to the upper northernmost part of the reservoir. The most likely reason for the northward expansion of the range of Volga pikeperch is climate change.
