AbstractThe study presents a comprehensive scientometric study of the research productivity of the top ten Indian Institutes of Technology. Theprimary objective is to evaluate the research productivity of top institutions as per the NIRF 2024 Engineering Rankings, extending the scope spanning 10 years from 2015 to 2024.The visualizations were generated using VOSviewer, which facilitated the mapping of research trends and collaboration networks. The study employs a scientometric study using data from the Scopus database, and the analysis assesses research output across various parameters, including publication volume, document types, authorship trends, national and international collaborations, funding agency support, growth metrics (AGR, CAGR, RGR, and Dt), and institutional interconnectivity. The findings reveal that IITD, IITK, IITM, and IITB collectively accounted for over 54% of the total research output, demonstrating their dominant role in India’s higher education research ecosystem. Journal articles accounted for the majority (66.72%), followed by conference papers (22.42%) and book chapters (5.07%), reflecting both scholarly rigour and rapid dissemination practices. Consistent research output growth was observed, with a CAGR of 8.01%, while metrics such as Relative Growth Rate and Doubling Time highlighted accelerated cumulative growth. The most prolific authors across IITs include Singh, B.P. (IITD), with 1,641 (13.05%) publications, and Bahinipati, S., and Mohanty, G.B. (IIT Madras), with over 900 publications each. The study shows that the IITs lead in research output and excel in quality, strategic collaborations, and interdisciplinary engagement, placing them at the forefront of India’s scientific progress. A key trend emerging is the convergence of collaboration, funding, and research quality, underscoring the global integration of Indian engineering education and research. Looking ahead, sustained internationalisation, stronger interdisciplinary connections, and a robust funding system will be vital for continued growth. The results of the study are expected to help in improving the need-basedcollection developmentand benchmarking performance, identifying gaps, and formulating strategies to enhance national and international research competitiveness.
