ABSTRACT As a reflective display, the luminance and contrast of electrowetting display (EWD) are affected by ambient light. In this paper, we propose a method to enhance the display effect of EWD under ambient light. Firstly, the contrast model is used to compensate the image to minimize the distortion of ambient light, and then the image is corrected by adaptive‐gamma correction to match the display characteristics of EWD. The proposed method performs better in absolute mean brightness error (AMBE), structural similarity (SSIM), and EME than the other method, increased by 50.8, 2.6, and 30.9, respectively. It is demonstrated that the proposed method reduces the distortion of ambient light on EWD displays and improves readability of EWD under ambient light.
