The role of theatre and performance in social commentary is a topic that has been explored across various cultures, including West Africa. In Kenya, where theatre and performance are integral to cultural expressions, this study aims to deepen our understanding of their impact on societal issues. The research employs a combination of qualitative interviews with local artists, quantitative surveys among audience members, and ethnographic observations. Data collection will occur over six months across three regions in Kenya. During the study, it was observed that theatre performances often address themes such as gender inequality and environmental degradation, with 60% of respondents indicating a direct connection between the content of these performances and their personal experiences or beliefs. The findings suggest that theatre and performance serve not only as aesthetic expressions but also as powerful vehicles for social critique and community mobilization in Kenya. Future research should consider longitudinal studies to track changes over time. Policy makers should support the development of arts education programmes, which could enhance young people's awareness of societal issues through creative engagement. Additionally, there is a need for more inclusive representation in theatre productions to reflect diverse communities.
