An anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) experiment for the mercury-free determination of bismuth in an over-the-counter pharmaceutical product is described in this paper. A carbon-paste electrode (CPE) was used as a satisfactory replacement for mercury-based electrodes, which are commonly implemented for the determination of metal ions in ASV. The standard addition method was used in the determination of bismuth, which was present at the low part-per-million concentration level. Students also have the option of exploring the effect of scan rate, deposition time, and deposition potential on the ASV response at a CPE.
