Nidra (sleep) is one of the fundamental pillars of health described in Ayurveda. Along with Ahara (diet) and Brahmacharya (regulated lifestyle), Nidra forms the three supporting factors of life known as Trayopastambha. Proper sleep maintains physiological balance, mental stability, and social well-being. In the modern era, rapid lifestyle changes, occupational stress, technological exposure, and irregular routines have significantly disturbed natural sleep patterns, resulting in various health problems such as insomnia, anxiety, metabolic disorders, and reduced productivity. Ayurveda provides a comprehensive understanding of Nidra and emphasizes the importance of proper sleep for maintaining equilibrium of body and mind. Modern medicine also recognizes sleep as a critical factor in maintaining neurological, hormonal, and metabolic functions. The concept of sleep hygiene, widely emphasized in modern health sciences, corresponds closely with Ayurvedic principles such as Dinacharya, Ratricharya, balanced diet, and mental relaxation. This article discusses the physiological, psychological, and social importance of Nidra in the contemporary era with special emphasis on sleep hygiene practices and their relevance in Ayurvedic lifestyle management.
