This paper assesses plastic deformation demand of square hollow section columns in low and mid-rise steel moment-resisting frames using three-dimensional structural frame analysis, considering elasto-plastic behavior of panel zones. First, the hysteresis characteristics of structural components for analysis models are identified for tracing the previous test results with high accuracy. Next, time history response analysis is conducted for several types of steel frames with varying column material strengths and input ground motion directions. Finally, plastic deformation demand of the columns is quantified based on the numerical results and compared with the past proposals.
