The article is devoted to the linguistic means that sports fans, in particular football fans, choose for comments on a sporting event. The comments are considered as empirical material for the study of the linguo-creative potential of the communication participants in the written interaction. The author emphasizes that fans are active participants in sports discourse in general, and within the genre of sports online forum, in particular. The analysis is based on the English-language posts on the The Guardian website in the comments section devoted to the English Premier League (EPL). The article is a qualitative study aimed at describing the selected material and highlighting the main linguistic means used by football fans. The linguistic means of fans' linguistic creativity were selected using the continuous sampling method. Expanded metaphors were identified. The article highlights precedent phenomena that have evaluative implications depending on the source domain. It also discusses the role of word formation in the speech interactions of English-speaking football fans, especially blending. Lexemes built via blending are of great interest due to their combination of explicit form and implied semantics. Given that any online platform where participants can exchange comments about a sporting event has content moderation, communicants must refrain from offensive or discriminatory language. This fact forces participants to demonstrate linguistic creativity – linguocreativity – in order to ensure that their post is not deleted. Thus, such comments provide a rich source of research material, as they must be decodable to other participants in the discourse, while also maintaining their stylistic, emotional, and evaluative characteristics.
